Craig Ferrin was born in a musical home. His father, C. Roy Ferrin, directed the highly-acclaimed Tooele High School Band for 35 years. He holds his bachelor and doctorate degrees from the University of Utah, where he studied Gregg I. Hanson, Jerold Ottley, Mark Ely, Ed Asmus, Barry Kopetz and Alan Weight. His master’s degree is from Northwestern University where he studied with Bennet Reimer, Donald Casey, John Paynter and Vincent Cicowicz.
As director of Hunter High School instrumental music, he developed the largest instrumental music program in Salt Lake County while completing his doctorate degree in Music Education. He joined the faculty of Salt Lake Community College in 2002 where he initiated the instrumental music program. He currently teaches the Jazz, Commercial Music Ensembles, General Education Music and Classes on the Music Business. He has served as chair of the SLCC Faculty Senate Curriculum, Distance Education Committee and is currently President of the Salt Lake Community College Faculty Association. .
Craig is active as a conductor and trumpet performer and has been featured in the McDonald's All-American High School Band and Los Angeles Olympics All-American College Band. Currently he conducts the Murray Concert Band and performs regularly with the CityJazz Big Band in the Salt Lake area.
He is happily married to Tamera Jo and they have 6 children and two granddaughters. For recreation he likes to swim, bike and hike, especially as the travel. He is currently pursuing another master’s degree in Learning Technology and Instructional Design at Utah State University.
